Harris St. Laurent & Wechsler LLP partner Yonaton Aronoff was quoted in a Forbes story about HSW client Post University’s ongoing copyright infringement case against Course Hero, Inc., a subscription-based course materials platform. Aronoff and HSW attorneys Alisha McCarthy, Jaclyn Newman and Ashley Robinson represent the Connecticut-based university alongside co-counsel Timothy Johnson of Getz Balich LLP and Benjamin Lehberger of Dilworth IP.

In the lawsuit pending in federal court in Connecticut, Post University has brought claims against Course Hero alleging direct, contributory and vicarious copyright infringement; violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act; trademark infringement; unfair competition and unjust enrichment. The university asserts that Course Hero’s platform allows users to upload and download unauthorized copies of its course materials, exams and other university-owned educational materials, and that it hides those materials behind a paywall to prevent copyright holders from policing their works.

“Unauthorized copying is nothing new, but Course Hero's business takes it to a shocking level, systematically capitalizing on content owned by others without their consent, facilitating violations of academic integrity across the higher education landscape,” Aronoff said in the article. “Academic integrity is a top priority for Post University, and our investigation has revealed a staggering number of infringements, amounting to tens of thousands of separate violations."
