Joseph Gallagher is a commercial and employment litigator and counsellor, who combines thoughtful and aggressive advocacy with a practical approach to representing clients. His goal in every engagement is the same: understanding what his client needs and developing an effective path to getting there. He represents individual, partnership and corporate clients in state and federal courts, arbitrations, mediations, and in employment negotiations and separations.
Some of his recent engagements include:
Negotiating numerous employment and separation agreements for financial services professionals, senior executives, and startup founders.
Lead counsel for technology company defending against fiduciary duty, fraud, and contract claims brought against it and its founders by a foreign investor in New York State court.
Representing a well-known activist investor in arbitration against his former business partner over significant breakup payments.
Prosecuting an arbitration against BuzzFeed on behalf of dozens of former employees wrongly prevented from trading their company stock at its recent IPO. This has been covered nationwide, including in The New York Times, Axios, and Bloomberg News.
Advising boutique investment bank in arbitration against former client in a fee dispute over multi-million dollar transaction.
Defending a premier e-sports company in a breach of contract litigation over a purported “finder’s fee” demanded in connection with a financing transaction. Mr. Gallagher also has extensive experience with securities litigation, class actions, and whistleblower matters.
Prior to joining Harris St. Laurent & Wechsler, Mr. Gallagher practiced at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP. He received his BA, magna cum laude, from Williams College, and his JD from the Georgetown University Law Center.
